Who has taken the highest Wickets in the IPL?

As we know, Cricket is a game of Batsmen! But Bowlers do change a sure match into a roller coaster with a great, timely bowling performance on that day. Bowlers in the T20 Formats like IPL use every technique to put pressure on the opposite batting side with their skills and experience. A consistent economy and getting wickets regularly keep the bowler in the top position in the IPL.

In this blog article, let us focus on the highest wicket-takers in the IPL, so far. There seem to be 3 bowlers in this category till today. 

As of today, on the opening day of the IPL 2024 season, the top Bowler in the IPL with the highest number of wickets are as follows with Indian Spinner, Yuzuvendra Chahal as a top bowler in the list now.

Now let us discuss their performance till today one by one:

Yuzvendra Chahal

The Indian Spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in IPL history with 187 wickets in 145 matches. He was a part of three IPL teams in history including the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rajasthan Royals. He has won the Purple Cap with RCB in 2022.

Dwayne Bravo

The Caribbean All-rounder, Dwayne Bravo grabbed 183 wickets in 161 matches with the second position on this list. Playing for Chennai Super Kings, he has won the Purple cap for two times. Bravo has also played for many franchises in the IPL competition like Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions.

Piyush Chawla

Another Indian spinner Piyush Chawla is the third-highest wicket-taker in the IPL history. He has taken a total of 179 wickets in 181 games from 2008 to 2023. He has represented four IPL Franchisees in his IPL career but mostly spent his time at Kolkata Knight Riders and his winning shot has won the team the IPL 2014 title.

Amit Mishra

On no.4 on the list is again an Indian Spinner, Amit Mishra with 173 wickets. In his long IPL career, Amit Mishra has played a total of 161 matches. He has played for teams – Delhi Capitals, Lucknow SuperGiants, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Ravichandran Ashwin

One of India’s most performing spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin has shown a regular outshining performance in the IPL so far. Ashwin has a record of 171 wickets in 197 matches played in the seasons of 2008 to 2023. He has played for five teams in the IPL tournament’s history.

Lasith Malinga

Playing for Mumbai Indians for almost 12 years, Lasith Malinga has taken 170 wickets for the MI franchise from 2009 to 2019. He played almost 122 matches, winning the Purple Cap in 2011. This is an amazing record for an IPL bowler from overseas.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Sunrisers Hyderabad fast bowler Buvneshwar Kumar has the 7th position in this list for his 170-wicket tally in the tournament’s history. A little weaker economy following Lasith Malinga. Bhuvneshwar is a significant player in the IPL, He has won the Purple Cap two times.

Sunil Narine

One of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ old bowlers, Sunil Narine has got 163 wickets in the IPL tournament. He started in 2012 and has played 162 games in his IPL career. Sunil Narine has been the leading wicket-taker for KKR in both years of their IPL title –  2012 and 2014.

Ravindra Jadeja

Chennai’s all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja has  152 wickets in the IPL. The famous Indian cricketer has played 226 games in the IPL’s history, representing teams- Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Lions, Kochi, and Rajasthan Royals. He has helped CSK to their fifth title by scoring 10 runs in just 2 balls against Gujarat Titans in the final.

Harbhajan Singh

One of the greatest spinners from India, Harbhajan Singh is in 10th place with 150 IPL wickets for him. He played almost 163 total matches for 3 IPL franchises in his career.

We can review the fact that mostly Indian bowlers, especially spinners have dominated the top 10 list of the highest wicket-takers in the IPL. Their records are unbelievable and consistent throughout their IPL career with one or two upsets. IPL is held in India, so Indian bowling conditions are really helpful for the spinners. Hopefully, some Indian fast bowlers or medium pacers will also hit this chart soon in this upcoming IPL season or future seasons.
